How to use the tawaf counter

Tawaf is seven anticlockwise rounds around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the line of the Black Stone. In a crowd it is easy to lose count, so open the tawaf counter before you start, choose Tawaf, and tap once each time you return to the Black Stone corner.

The counter saves your progress on the device, so if your screen locks mid-round, your count is still there. A gentle vibration confirms each tap, and a stronger one marks the seventh round.

Switching the tawaf counter to sa‘i mode

Sa‘i is seven laps between Safa and Marwah. Going from Safa to Marwah counts as one lap and returning counts as the second, so you finish at Marwah. In sa‘i mode the counter shows which direction you are walking.

What to read during tawaf and sa‘i

No fixed dua is prescribed for each round. Make dhikr, recite Qur’an and ask Allah for whatever you need in any language. Two supplications are reported at specific points:

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Rabbana atina fi-d-dunya hasanatan wa fi-l-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaba-n-nar.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

On Safa and on MarwahFacing the Kaaba on Safa and on Marwah; say it three times with your own duas in between

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar.

Allah is the Greatest (three times). There is no god but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant and defeated the confederates alone.

Tawaf counter: tips before you travel

Open the tawaf counter page on your phone before you leave home and add it to your home screen. That way it opens instantly in Makkah or Madinah, even when the mobile signal inside the Haram is weak. All our tools are designed for one-handed use, with large buttons and high-contrast text that stays readable in bright sunlight.

If you are travelling with parents or children, share the link with them too. Families often find it helpful when everyone is looking at the same plan, checklist or dua on their own device, especially when you are separated in the crowds and meet again at a fixed point after prayer.

Privacy and accuracy

The tawaf counter runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us unless you choose to submit a quote request. The religious content is drawn from the Qur’an and well-known hadith collections, and where scholars differ we say so. Rules for visas and permits change, so always confirm the latest details on official platforms such as Nusuk.

Who the tawaf counter is for

We built the tawaf counter for first-time pilgrims who want reassurance, for experienced pilgrims helping parents or friends, and for group leaders who need a quick reference to share. It is equally useful at home while you prepare and on the road when a question comes up and there is no time to search through long articles.

If something on this page does not match your situation — for example a medical condition, a disability or travel with young children — tell us about it in your quote request. Our advisers will take it into account, and for religious questions we always recommend asking a qualified scholar you trust.
